Title: Concentric

Artist Statement

Concentric circles share the same center point. Nested within one another, spreading outward like a stone throw ripple in water. It shares a common axis and expands outward.  Tree rings are concentric layers showing a tree's age and like an onion, it has layers. My work entitled Concentric was imagined and inspired by the work of abstract artist  Alma Thomas. I found a circular trivet in an antique shop. I often get inspiration from found objects. I told my questioning boyfriend, " I got a plan."  Its shape and visual rotating design inspired me to start this work. Using bits of porcelain, tiles and shells I mosaiced rings around its centerpiece filling it with natural shells from the ocean. Its endless rings go beyond the space aloud to suggest infinite growth. The intentional colors of red white and blue, discover bits of other colors to signify the diversity of our melting pot. I hope the viewer thinks about the human spirit. How our kindness can affect and span out to others like a ripple. What is our center? Do we honor "pieces" of  different life stories? Can we learn, work together, empathize, in hopes to connect instead of divide?

Title: Fractured

 Artist Statement

Broken, cracked and split into parts. A fractured bone, a fractured relationship, a fractured water pipe. Broken but fractures can heal. Inspired by current circumstances and public vibe, I'm drawn to the flag which is broken into pieces and struggling for some kind of assemblage. Its entire beauty needs to be repaired and not just by grout. Many Americans are feeling shattered, cracked and smashed. Fractured. While I connect to a family of service and greatly respect sacrifices made, the service soldiers marching adjacent to the star to represent that our freedom isn't free. War is a fracture. Peace is healing. This piece of work was mosaiced with porcelain, tile, metal. I want the viewer to contemplate. Are we feeling fractured in our nation?  Are we a fractured society? Can we heal like a fractured bone. What can you do about it? 

Title: American Eagle

Artist Statement

This artwork entitled American Eagle is an inspired vision while I was looking at a book of birds. I love birds and all the differences they have in looks, sound and characteristics. I wondered why this majestic bird was chosen to  become a symbol of our nation. What was the connection? In researching I learned that the bald eagle was chosen as the United States national bird in 1782 because it is native only to North America. The bird embodies a new nation to symbolize American sovereignty.  In my youth and still today, the vision of this bird's outstretched wings soaring in our "Sweet Land of Liberty" makes me emotionally choked up. Represented in so many ways, I was motivated to draw this eagle upfront. I am a proud American who loves our country like so many others. With pen and ink, I made lines by stippling, scumbling, and cross-hatching incorporating line weight variations and finally color pencil. The eagle sits focused and in front of the colors of our flag. Showing his pride and commitment to represent strength, freedom and independence.  I desire the viewer to look at my piece and reflect on what the American Eagle symbolizes to them today.  Is the eagle still representative to new generations? I wonder if today they would choose a different bird?
